An entire act is spent killing a corrupted priesthood inside their own temple complex.
Diablo II makes the corrupted church a whole act rather than a boss. The Zakarum, also called the Church of Light, was the dominant faith of Sanctuary, teaching that the Light exists within each person; the Paladin class is one of its holy knights, using its powers against demons. Unknown to them, Mephisto's soulstone had lain in the Zakarum catacombs beneath Kurast for centuries, and through it he corrupted the high council. They freed him. His power mutated the faithful into bestial demons, and Act III has the player fighting through the temple city of Travincal, killing the Council of priests, and destroying Mephisto's soulstone on the Hellforge. The player is often a Paladin of the same church.
