The church that rules the world was founded by an angel who wanted to be worshipped, and the villain is Lilith.
Diablo IV is the entry where the church is the establishment rather than the infiltrated institution. The Cathedral of Light governs what remains of Sanctuary after Malthael's genocide, and it was founded by Inarius — a rogue archangel, formerly an advisor to the Angiris Council — explicitly so that the beings of Sanctuary would worship and serve him, with himself styled its Prophet. Its Knights Penitent fought and defeated the older Zakarum faith. Commentary on the game describes it as a fanatical, narrow-minded church whose god has no interest in mankind. Against it stands Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, who with Inarius created humanity in the Pools of Creation and is addressed by her followers as Mother. She is released when a priest's despair breaks him, and her method is to draw out the sin already in people.
