The Golden City turns out to be an elven palace, which contradicts the scripture the whole Andrastian faith rests on.
The Veilguard's religious content is a lore revelation rather than a staged confrontation. The story concerns the elven pantheon — Solas, Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain — and establishes that the Evanuris were not gods at all but ascended mortals commanding powerful magic, whom Solas imprisoned in what is now called the Black City and was formerly the Golden City. That matters for the Chantry because the Chant of Light holds that the Maker built the Golden City as the centre of all creation. If it was an elven palace, the Chant is wrong, and since the Chant records Andraste's visions from the Maker, the foundation of the Andrastian faith is undercut. The Maker remains the only deity worshipped in Thedas never shown to exist in any form.
