The cult survived the bombs. Joseph Seed is still preaching, but the villains this time are raiders.
New Dawn picks up seventeen years after Far Cry 5's nuclear ending, and the religious material is inherited rather than restaged. The Project at Eden's Gate has become New Eden, a surviving community that read the bombs as the prophecy fulfilled; Joseph Seed is still alive and still preaching, and his son Ethan is a figure in the succession. The player can work with New Eden or against it. What changes the determination is the antagonist: the game's enemies are the Highwaymen, a secular raider outfit with no religious dimension at all. The cult is a faction in the world rather than the thing the game is about, which is the difference between implied and explicit here.
