Yevon has fallen. Its remnant now runs as a political party rather than a church.
X-2 is set two years after the fall of the Church of Yevon and is largely about the aftermath. With the faith discredited, its surviving apparatus reconstitutes as New Yevon, a conservative faction competing with the Youth League for control of Spira and campaigning on a platform of not dwelling on the past. The game's tone is deliberately lighter than its predecessor's and it does not restage the theological reveal; what it does is show what happens to a church after its doctrine is publicly falsified. The determination is lower than Final Fantasy X's for that reason — the institution is present and compromised, but the argument was already made.
