Spira is ruled by the Church of Yevon through its Maesters, temples, and the Crusaders who fight in its name. It teaches that Sin, the leviathan that destroys cities, exists because of humanity's arrogance, and that only atonement and a summoner's sacrificial pilgrimage bring the Calm. The party learns the Maesters have always known the truth: the Final Summoning rebuilds Sin, and Yu Yevon, the faith's founder, is inside it. Grand Maester Mika is himself an unsent dead man who chooses oblivion rather than face a world without the cycle.
