The worship shifts from the Great Journey to the Forerunners themselves, with the Didact commanding a splinter Covenant.
Halo 4 replaces the Covenant's theology with a different one. The Didact, freed from suspended animation, declares the return of the Forerunners as the galaxy's rulers and saviours and judges humanity unworthy of inheriting the Mantle of Responsibility — the Forerunners' own quasi-religious doctrine of stewardship over all life. Jul 'Mdama's remnant Covenant transfers its devotion to him. Opposing this is the Librarian, who reveals she shaped human evolution across a thousand lifetimes of planning and whom early humans worshipped as a goddess-like figure believed to attend each birth and assign a purpose. The player's designation throughout is Reclaimer.
